Einzig im unteren Bereich des Turmes waren stellenweise noch alte Verputzschichten vorhanden.

Like other castles of Montfort, Schattenburg in Feldkirch, Will Berg Vaduz, is also the castle of Sargans, headquarters of the counts of mountain-Sargans to leicht erhöhter Stelle über dem Städtchen. Über seine Gründungszeit hüllt sich der stolze Bau in beharrliches Schweigen, obwohl man mehrfach versucht hat, seinem Geheimnis mit Bauuntersuchungen und dendrochronologischen Analysen auf die Spur zu kommen. Immerhin steht seit der Arbeit der Dendrochronologen ein Datum von 1281 zur Diskussion, ein Datum, das zeitlich mit der ältesten urkundlichen Erwähnung des Schlosses zusammenfällt. Ob es sich dabei um das Baujahr oder eher um eine Erneuerungsphase nach einem Brand handelt, bleibt letztlich offen.
Dank der Weiternutzung als Landvogteisitz der Eidgenossen blieb dem Schloss Sargans das Schicksal anderer Burgen zunächst erspart, erst nachdem der letzte Landvogt ausgezogen war, began to fall apart to become more perceptible always: in 1820 the south wing was told by the integration of prison cells, drastic changes, and in 1865 the "Back castle" was in a neglected state of the pickaxe to the victim.

So wurden beispielsweise die alte Verputze weitestgehend geschont und nur Schadstellen ausgeflickt. Über das Schloss Sargans im 19. Jahrhundert und seine Restaurierungsgeschichte liegt eine ausführliche Publikation von Mathias Bugg vor, weshalb an dieser Stelle nicht näher darauf eingegangen werden muss.
1964 Innenrestaurierung des Bergfrieds (Projekt Walther Sulser) und Sondierung im Verlies durch Franziska Knoll-Heitz, St. Gallen. Schon Probst hatte 1901 an dieser Stelle gegraben und seine Ergebnisse veröffentlicht.
